Dr. Carroll Ustus Dexter, 86, of Silver Spring, MD passed away on April 21,2024. Born December 11, 1937, in Anton, KY, he was the beloved son of the late Estes Everett Dexter and Clara Evelyn Jones Dexter. Carroll spent his formative years - a life he loved - on the family farm in Anton, KY.
Following high school, Carroll received Bachelor and Masters degrees from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY, and began his teaching career in the public schools in that same community. Following his marriage to Carmela Overton in 1964, the two relocated to military base in Ponce, Puerto Rico where he taught 5th grade and coached basketball. In subsequent years, he received an Ed.S. degree from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN and an Ed.D. degree from the University of Houston. He served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at Antilles Consolidated School System in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1972 to 1978. After leaving Puerto Rico for Washington, DC, he assumed the position of Program Officer with the U. S. Department of Education, Impact Aid Program. He retired in 2003 as Director of Field Operations, which afforded him the opportunity to extensively travel the United States. Through the years he also taught at the college level. In retirement, he continued conducting consulting services. In all, his professional career in education spanned nearly 40 years.
Carroll’s interests included bowling, exercising, dancing, gardening, reading professional journals, managing his farms in Kentucky, traveling, and UK Wildcat Basketball. Following his retirement, he served for several years as Assistant Baseball Coach at Wakefield H.S. in Arlington, VA and was active in Arlington Host Lions, the Committee of 100 and the Gideons. He was a longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Arlington, VA, serving as chairman of multiple committees.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cecilia Anne Dexter.
Carroll is survived by Carmela, his wife of nearly 60 years; beloved son, Carroll Banning (C.B.), daughter-in-law Jennifer; and cherished granddaughter, Clara Louise Dexter, all of Silver Spring, MD; his twin brother, Harold Estes Dexter; nephew Eric Dexter; and niece Andrea Wilkins all of Bowling Green, KY.
Private memorial services to be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to Parkinson's Foundation.
